Glycolic acid is the simplest hydroxy acid. Glycolic acid was first
obtained in 1848 by treating glycine with nitrite and was confirmed
in 1851. Glycolic acid exists widely in nature, such as sugar cane,
sugar beet and immature grape juice contain a small amount of
glycolic acid, but its content is low, and coexistence with other
organic acids, difficult to separate recovery. In industry,
synthetic production is used.
