Steel plant Wastewater treatment
The production of iron from ore requires a powerful reduction reaction in a blast furnace. Cooling water is inevitably contaminated with products, especially ammonia and cyanide. The production of coke from coal in a coking plant also requires water cooling and the use of water in by-product separation. Contamination of waste streams includes gasification products such as benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, cyanide, ammonia, phenol, cresol, and a range of more complex organic compounds collectively referred to as PAHs. Converting iron or steel into sheet, wire or bar requires a hot and cold mechanical conversion stage that often uses water as lubricant and coolant. Contaminants include hydraulic oil, tallow, and particulate solids. The final treatment of steel products before sale to manufacture includes pickling in strong mineral acids to remove rust and preparing the surface for tinning or chrome plating or other surface treatments such as galvanizing or painting. Two commonly used acids are hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. Wastewater includes acid wash water and spent acid. Although many plants operate acid recovery plants to cook mineral acids out of iron salts, there is still a large amount of highly acidic ferrous sulfate or ferrous chloride that needs to be disposed of.
