Inlays and Onlays Meaning:
An inlay is a filling in which the material used is placed in the
cavity of a tooth. In this sense, it is very similar to ordinary
amalgam or composite white fillers. Onlay fillings insert material
not only into the cavity of the tooth but also into the surface of
the tooth. These are called "indirect fillings," which means they
are produced in a dental laboratory and then glued to your teeth.
They are typically used on the back teeth, traditionally the ones
we use the most and are the hardest to clean. This also means that
they are the most perishable teeth.
Inlays and Onlays Advantages:
Some of these include their natural color to ensure continuity with
other teeth. They are durable and less likely to change color over
time. Also, they look attractive and enhance the overall appearance
of the teeth. Inlays and/or Onlays can be used for up to 30 years,
much longer than standard amalgam fillings.
Inlays and Onlays installation:
Unlike normal population, which is performed as a single program,
this process has two stages. The procedure is performed under local
anesthesia.
The first stage is to create a mold from an impression of the damaged tooth, which is used as a guide for casting. Casting molds are used to produce inlays or onlays.
The second stage is the assembly of the inlay or onlay.
Your dentist will examine the joint before securing it in place with dental cement. This ensures it stays in place. Then, he or she will check the color before final cleaning and polishing.
