ASTM is the common designation for the ASTM International (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials). ASTM International is an American based standard organisation that oversees the development and curation of technical standards. One of these technical standards is A479.

The ASTM A479 (A479M is the equivalent metric version of A479) is a technical document a that outlines the requirements for stainless steel hot/cold finished bars. Bars with various forms such as: rounds, squares, and hexagons, and hot-rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees, and channels. These stainless-steel forms are targeted for use in boiler and pressure vessels. The specification covers four categories of steels austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, ferritic, and martensitic. Contained within A479 are the specified tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness values for various heat treatments (normalized, tempered, annealed, and quenched). A special note for the heat treatments and additional corrosion tests for the austenitic stainless are also provided in A479. Steel grades for A479 are defined by their chemical composition. ASTM A479 equivalent materials in other standards may be found by investigating the individual material grades.

ASTM A479 Round Bar has one important thing going for them: they are made from stainless steel. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant and the stainless steel which has higher alloy content are able to withstand the onslaught of acids, "chlorine bearing environments" as well as solutions containing alkaline. Because of this resistance, some of the applications and uses of stainless steel bars are in machining, fasteners, grills and construction. The 304, 304L, and 304H may be considered to perform uniformly in most corrosive environments. Plain round bar is commonly used to separate mesh in concrete slabs and is used in a range of commercial and infrastructure applications.

ASTM A479 specification covers hot and cold-finished Stainless Steel Bar, including rounds, squares, and hexagons, and hot-rolled or extruded shapes such as angles, tees, and channels for use in boiler and pressure vessel construction. Four grades of the stainless steel are available which includes austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, ferritic, and martensitic grades. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness shall be determined for the specimens subjected to normalized, tempered, annealed, and quenched conditions. The austenitic stainless steels shall be subjected to heat treatment and shall undergo corrosion test. The round bars rolling process takes place with placing the stainless steel in a analyzed continuous shape rolling mill which is released in the first eight rolling stands. Feed stock before the rolling process is controlled (dimensions, surface, number of melting) and then it is heated in a walking beam furnace according to the technology of heating the steel grade. When heated to the appropriate temperature, it is subjected to descaling operations generated by the heating process. The next stages are technological operations of rolling in individual stands. After the hot rolling process, the product obtained is cooled down to ambient temperature.
