• Blind rivets, also commonly referred to as POP rivets, are primarily used in applications where access to the rear (blind side) of the joint is not possible. Rivets have a two-piece construction; one is called the rivet body, housing, or cap, and the other is called the stem or mandrel. The cap and mandrel are pre-assembled and ready to use. Rivets are installed by pulling the mandrel with a riveting tool, which causes the body to deform and clamp to the joint. At the designed clamping force, the mandrel breaks off and is discarded. One benefit of blind rivets is that they are not material specific, which means they can combine two different material types in the same way.
• To use blind rivets, drill a hole, then attach the rivet to the hole. Then a tool pulls the mandrel onto the cap of the rivet. The back of the mandrel either has a bulge at the end or is attached to the cap in a way that allows the brim of the cap to expand down towards the material. Once this expansion reaches the material and creates pressure, the design failure in the mandrel can reach its peak force capacity and snap. Leave the rivets installed correctly.
