Stainless steel bushings are corrosion resistant due to their unique chemical composition and metallurgical properties. The corrosion resistance of stainless steel is primarily attributed to the presence of chromium (Cr) in its alloy. Chromium forms a thin, protective oxide layer on the surface of the steel, known as the passive film, which prevents corrosion by isolating the steel from the surrounding environment.
When comparing 304 and 316 stainless steel flanged bushings, both materials possess excellent corrosion resistance, but there are some key differences. 304 stainless steel, which is composed of approximately 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel, is widely used due to its good corrosion resistance in many environments. It is cost-effective and offers good performance in a range of applications, including food, medical, and chemical processing.
However, 316 stainless steel, which contains 2-3% molybdenum (Mo) in addition to the chromium and nickel content of 304, offers superior corrosion resistance in certain environments. The molybdenum content enhances the steel's ability to resist corrosion by chloride ions, such as those found in seawater or saline solutions. Therefore, 316 stainless steel is often specified for use in marine environments, chemical processing equipment, and other applications where higher corrosion resistance is required.
In summary, the corrosion resistance of stainless steel bushings is due to the protective oxide layer formed by chromium. While 304 stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance in many environments, 316 stainless steel with its additional molybdenum content provides superior resistance to chloride ion corrosion in specific applications.
