Biogas Plant Introduction:

The process of anaerobic digestion is complex and involves four main stages: hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. During the hydrolysis stage, complex organic molecules are broken down into simpler molecules, which are then converted into volatile fatty acids during the acidogenesis stage. These acids are then converted into acetate, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide during the acetogenesis stage. Finally, during the methanogenesis stage, acetate, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide are converted into methane and carbon dioxide.

The design of anaerobic reactors can vary depending on the specific application and waste stream characteristics. Some common types of anaerobic reactors include continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTRs), upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, and expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors.
