Contact Column Processor |
The GEA Barr-Rosin Contact Column Processor can be used for several unit operations, including cooling, heating, and purging of volatiles and residual moisture.
Free-flowing solids descend slowly and continuously through a vertical column. Heat transfer tubes are suspended across the vessel cross-current to the flow of material. The column is designed as a mass flow vessel giving uniform residence time and even thermal treatment to all of the solids. A small counter-current flow of air through a special gas distribution cone can be made to pass up through the material. This adds a convective component to increase the overall process efficiency and provide a smooth running operation.
Due to the long retention times possible, these columns are often used for diffusion controlled processes, as the final unit operation or finishing unit once the product has been processed in a GEA Barr-Rosin Fluid Bed or Rosinaire.
High heat transfer rates can be achieved in a simple, compact, and space-saving design. Minimal, if any air handling equipment is required, resulting in minimal moving parts and reliable, low maintenance operation.
Capacities range from pilot plant scale up to 100 tons / hour. GEA Barr-Rosin has supplied several commercial columns throughout the world.
Free flowing products, including powders, granules, prills, and crystals can be processed.
The GEA Barr-Rosin Research and Development Center is equipped with a pilot scale column processor.
