After many years research by the writer he established that the
Royal Burgess Golfing Society did exist as far back as 1735 and
possibly even earlier.
The book details the history of the club, i.e. Origin and Title,
Early Meeting Places, Early Members & Greenkeepers, Uniform,
Prominent Players, Competitions and Handicaps and many other
fascinating details about one of Scotland’s most famous golf clubs.
There are also chapters about the three courses where the Society
have played their golf, i.e. Brunstfield, Musselburgh and latterly
There are numerous black/white images depicting famous members,
caddies, trophies and medals and towards the rear of the book a
number of pages are dedicated to honorary members, ordinary
members, principal rules and regulations and copies of the notes of
principal documents. There are a total of 111 pages.
The book is in good condition. The spine has slight movement but
all the pages remain in place and tightly bound. There are a few
marks on the dark blue hard cover and the colour has worn at the
base of the spine please see the images. There are brown spots on a
few of the pages but the text remains perfectly legible. There is a
hand written signature inside the front cover which looks to be
George A. Shaw.
