A rare and interesting cleek having a weighted round sole with a
straight line top edge. The lower part of the stamp on the head
clearly shows ANDREW which suggests that the club was produced at
St. Andrews. The top section of the stamp is unclear but using a
magnifying glass there looks to be the letters HIT which may be
part of the name WHITE. This club was probably designed to enable
the player to strike the ball from a deep lie. A nice collectors
item or could be used for a smooth faced play set having 28 degrees
loft and swing weight D6.
The blade is slightly elongated and the depth is wider towards the
rounded toe end. Tom Morris produced a similar style club in 1891
known as the ‘cupped ball’ elliptical face cleek as shown on page
549 in The Jeffery B. Ellis collection catalogue for the Sotherby’s
auction held in September 2007. However the blade was more egg
shaped in appearance and may not have had a weighted bottom edge.
The straight shaft is securely fitted to the 4” hosel and has been
fitted with a new light tan hide grip with new black waxed lined
whipping at both the top and bottom.
The club measures 37.5” (95cm)
