Knowledge about aluminum die casting


The most basic idea of ​​aluminum die casting is to fill a mold (mold) with liquid metal in order to press it into any shape you want to cast. For most industrial projects that require metal parts, this is an essential process. This is partly due to the fact that although its start-up cost is higher than some other processes, it can produce cheaper unit costs in the long run, especially for mass production. In addition, aluminum die castings can also produce a smooth surface, so that the product has a good aesthetic gloss.

 

It all starts with the casting mold itself. The cavity is created by using two steel molds that have been machined into a certain shape. These molds are then used in the casting process similar to injection molds.

 

One of the most important factors to keep in mind when casting and producing metal products is lowering the temperature. Uncontrolled high temperatures can cause metals to burn and deteriorate, not to mention serious safety issues. Another advantage of aluminum die casting is that it can reduce these problems by lubricating the mold during the metal production process, thereby helping to keep the parts cool, and also making it easier to take out the newly cast metal product.

 

When the two halves are pressed together, the molten metal is pressed into the space formed by the two opposite molds to complete the process. After the casting has solidified, the mold is opened and the part is taken out.

 

 

Hot casting and cold die casting


Depending on the project, aluminum castings are completed through "hot" or "cold" processes.

 

In hot die casting, hydraulic pistons are essential for forcing molten metal into the die casting mold. The hot die casting machine has a built-in furnace that can heat the metal in real time during the process. Hot die casting is also rapid die casting, and the typical casting time from start to finish is about 15 minutes.

 

In contrast, cold casting requires additional steps due to the lack of a built-in furnace. Instead, this is done in a separate chamber. Once the metal is melted, it is then transferred to the casting machine through the injection cylinder. The biggest advantage of this method is that it allows die casting to use more materials than hot die casting. Metals with high melting points may melt too quickly in the hot die casting chamber, and therefore require finer processing and casting, and cold casting can provide this function.

 

Die casting material


Examples of metals most suitable for cold room machines include aluminum, brass, copper, iron, nickel, and steel. Hot chamber casting is more suitable for processing tin, zinc and other metals and alloys with lower melting points.

 

Sand casting and die casting


This is another difference in the casting process between sand casting and die casting. Die casting involves pressing molten metal into a mold through high pressure injection and extrusion, while full sand casting pours the same metal into the mold. Sand casting involves pressing sand and clay together to form a sand box. These can then be used to shape the metal as needed. Once the metal cools, the sand is blown away.

Aluminum die casting is often faster than sand casting.

 

Squeeze casting and semi-solid molding.


Another change in the aluminum die casting process is between squeeze casting and semi-solid casting. In the former case, the halves are pressed together and the metal is cast by generating high pressure without entraining gas. In semi-solid casting, the purpose of casting metal blanks is to produce low-consistency aluminum castings that are easy to handle.
